When the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India in 1947, the then Governor-General Lord Mountbatten suggested that in view of India and Pakistan’s competing claims for the state, the accession should be confirmed by a “referendum, plebiscite, election”.
plebiscite: Literary this means a vote given by a whole country on a specific issue. in countries like switzerland, most of the government policies have to be passed by a plebicite–so its government by the people. Here it means a right given to thge people of kashmir to decide over as to which sided they wish to align to.
Then there were wars— some named it ‘war for independence of the people of kashmir’ and ‘protection of state territory’ by others.. but outcome was–
in the war of 1949—- 2/3rd of the disputed area came under indian control.
Then governments of both sides agreed on a plebiscite. This was on the condition that the pakistani nationals and tribesmen who had come to fight in kashmir, be withdrawn. But thats pakistan after all , you cant expect that to happen and that DID NOT ..
A year after india also withdrew from the agreement on plebiscite on two accounts.
1 pakis did not remove the people
2. elections affirmed indian rule over the territory
After the outbreak of insurgency in the Valley of Kashmir in the late 1980s, militants and political activists claimed that they had never been able to exercise their right of self-determination and the issue of the plebiscite was again raised.
And now they wished to add a third option i.e ‘INDEPENDENCE’. which means demand for a separate country altogether
In a recent survey only 2% people wanted kashmir to get aligned to paki. and a similiar % voted for india .. and most of the people voted for the THIRD option…
It seems as if—-the ‘heaven’(kashmir) is going out of the hands of !ncredible India.
